Bachelor Girls (Bristol DramSoc)

With the men away at war, how will the women left behind entertain themselves? This new four-hander by Evanthe Gee and Connie James sets the scene well with music, props, and costume cementing the play in its 1940s context. Lily Robinson, Ava Zarate, Claudia Osborne, and Honey Gawn-Hopkins bring the text to life, truthfully portraying women enjoying the freedom of a life without men, whilst battling with the reality of their impending return. However, the script does require some refining – the language was not always true to the period, and the themes could have been explored with less melodrama. Overall, it was an engaging piece, and, with a little work, has potential to be transferred to a larger theatre.

Greenside @ Riddles Court, until 17 Aug.
