Anton Hur, R F Kuang & Emily Wilson: Found In Translation (Edinburgh International Book Festival)

A well rounded insight into the art of translation from both an academic and commercial point of view from this event featuring three panellists exploring their respective fields of translation, through discussion that allowed a non linguist such as myself to begin to consider some of the complexities translation holds. From Emily Wilson discussing how to convey Ancient Greek angst to a modern day audience, to Rebecca Kuang’s observation of the power of not being able to map languages – a main theme to her book ‘Babel’. Anton Hur’s witty humour was the highlight of the show for me – in particular his hilarious explanation of having to “gay up” a Korean novel for western audiences.
