Amazons (Gaël Le Cornec, Guimarães Rosa Institute Award)

A show deeply rooted in the artist’s soul, freely gifted to its audiences. As Gaël Le Cornec nears receiving her British citizenship she looks back at her Brazilian heritage and the forgotten female voices that made an impact defending the Amazon rainforest. It walks the line of being informative but also entertaining, as the combination of creative visuals from a simple phone camera and a lyrical and poignant script delivering clear, evocative imagery sweeps the audience through these historic tales. Le Cornec is spectacular, giving a raw, powerful performance and connecting emotionally with her audience, as well as conveying exactly how much her South American roots mean to her. A whole rainforest of feelings are generated and we are all mesmerised by the piece.

Summerhall, until 25 Aug.
