I counted 26 Elvis Presley songs in this juke box musical about banning “loud music, public necking and tight pants” in 1950s small town America, which was performed with charm and enthusiasm by a young amateur cast from New Zealand. Seen on Broadway in 2005, the witty libretto crams a lot of adult life themes into 90 minutes including coming out, repression and finding love after bereavement. There are some strong singers and the jiving – particularly during the large group numbers – is joyfully and energetically unpolished. Special mention goes to the actor playing looming, stereotypically silent fifties lawman Sheriff Earl, who bursts out with an effective plot twist at the end. Challenging ideas and happy endings with a smile and a nod to Shakespeare.
