Afternoon Violin And Piano (Sheena Jardine and Richard Lewis)

What a gem was hidden by this unassuming title! Both with impeccable musical pedigrees, the performers’ professionalism and musicianship ensured a highly enjoyable hour, focusing on Edinburgh composers topped and tailed by Mozart and Saint-Saëns. ‘Poѐme Arabesque No. 3’ was dedicated to Sheena Jardine by late composer Michael Garrett and it was by turns serene and wistful with a cheeky unexpected ending that made the audience laugh. Scots Drawing Room Style arranger and composer William McGibbon’s piece ‘There’s Three Good Fellows Ayont Yon Glen’ showed the pair’s versatility. Camille Saint-Saëns’ ‘Sonata No. 1 In D Minor Opus 75’ was majestic – played with high drama and creating musical turbulence. It certainly prepared us for our return to the teeming Festival streets!
