COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
A Stan Is Born! (Alexis Sakellaris)
Divas rule Alexis Sakellaris’ world. This musical mission of self-discovery is an uplifting, if uneven, piece of theatre. The script is bubblegum sweet and packed with slang, with Sakellaris quick to explain the star-stan power dynamic to the uninitiated. The songs are the strength of the piece, charting Sakellaris’ journey as a teen in rural Germany. The narrative is charming, but leaves feelings of discomfort distinctly unexplored. There’s a heavy question surrounding the nuance of navigating parents’ generational homophobia which feels boxed away a little too neatly after a musical number. Likewise, jokes about violent men being secretly queer taste a bit like Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album (sour). Still, expect self-love by the bucketful and a mastery of hair flinging.
ZOO Playground, until 25 Aug.
