COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
44 Sex Acts In One Week (Clubhouse Productions)
‘Let us make mankind and let them have dominion over…’, well, pretty much everything. This intelligent and layered show skilfully picks apart that deeply embedded trope of western ‘civilization’. Sexy and very funny, it is also thoughtful and provocative. The language is explicit but the action less so, even if there are some fruity exchanges. Layered into the show are vignettes of exploitation, submission, and the abuse of power. There’s a parallel plot about the true nature of freedom, be it for estate agents, wolves or frogs. It’s all confidently and expertly done with excellent performances, good production values and mosquitoes. It is of course the latter who have the last laugh as hubris, as it must, asserts itself.
Pleasance Dome, until 26 Aug.
