COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
1984 (withintheatre)
Catch this contemporary presentation of Orwell’s classic dystopia before it closes on 11 Aug. Written in 1948 about a future 36 years hence, it fares well a further 40 years on. As pertinent as ever, as disturbing as ever. This is a strong piece of theatre with convincing performances and good use of music and live video. A simple visual backdrop of human contact is pointedly subverted by current newspeak from Russia and Belarus. Sadly, most countries could be added; the populist threat is everywhere. Presented as a deconstruction of Winston’s thought crimes, it forcefully reminds us of the dangerous power of those who would tell us what to think. Good theatre from people directly affected by current actuality.
Summerhall, until 11 Aug.
