Tina Packer’s book ‘Women of Will’ is described as a “fierce and funny exploration of Shakespeare’s understanding of the feminine”. This play is faithful to that topic, though seen through the rather opaque prism of a ‘resting’ actor (male) of a certain age coaching a young would-be drama school student (female). I found it hard to shake off a sense of contrivance here, and the backstories were thin, undermining the more convincing relationship which develops between the two performers. But there was some fine Shakespearean acting, especially from the young drama school applicant. Her Lady Macbeth was strong, while her feisty Juliet was well suited to the topic. A nice idea, and enjoyable, though let down by the underdeveloped framing.
