This charming musical entertainment’s clever title tells you what it is about. Except perhaps that it’s not so much about knitting as about knitting songs. We learn that knitting was popular on both sides of the Atlantic during both World Wars, prompting major outbreaks of knitting songs. These were mostly patriotic, knitting for victory and so forth, but some were risqué or romantic too. Melanie Gall, a professional opera singer, has uncovered more than 100 such songs, including one written by Glenn Miller shortly before his untimely death. Melanie’s selection – amounting to a brief history of the genre – is stitched together with interesting and witty introductions, aided by knitting ephemera and quirky true stories. A warm and engaging hour.
