Sheena Easton’s ‘Big Day’ concert on Glasgow Green’s 1990 did not go to plan. Objects thrown from the crowd included, as falsely mythologised, a glow-stick which hit her in the face. This new play revisits that chaotic event, following a group of young women whose drunken heckling lands them in jail – and forces them to confront the fracturing bonds of their friendship. Sydney Mulligan stands out amongst an exceptional five-woman cast, each bringing distinct fire to their roles. The play tackles weighty themes – female agency, homelessness and grief – without losing its rebellious spirit or dark humour. Milly Sweeney’s script captures the desperation and defiance of young Scots facing a bleak future. Lucy Pedersen’s direction keeps the energy surging.
