COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
Revolver (Shared Experience)
Emily Woof writes and stars in an updated version of her 1993 play about how obsessive love invariably goes wrong. The narrative offers two timelines: her anxious TV researcher in the present day and her John Lennon-obsessed mother in the 1960s. The play has a number of ideas that don’t quite gel together, while the tone never quite settles at one location; there are some good laughs, but there’s also a gear shift to much darker themes. The play also switches focus from The Beatles and John Lennon to Valerie Solanas, an infamous would-be assassin of the 1960s. It’s an uncomfortable and somewhat bemusing shift. Woof, though, is a seasoned performer who is compelling to watch throughout the hour.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 25th Aug.
