SKYE: A Thriller (K Media / Summerhall Arts)

This show will appeal to people that love a dark thriller. While on holiday with her family, Annie spots someone familiar at the beach… but it can’t be him, because… well… he’s dead. Playwright Ellie Keel’s script kept the audience’s attention as it unravelled through to its chilling climax, while actors Dawn Steele and James Robinson brilliantly shift between characters, giving impeccable performances, supported by Matthew Iliffe’s flowing stage direction. At times though, it feels like a struggle to follow the complex story because of character changes or timeline jumps, and ultimately the play falters somewhat because it’s too big a story to be squeezed into just fifty minutes. Overall, though, it’s a piece that will send shivers down your spine.

Summerhall, until 25 Aug.
