Jeezus! (Alpaqa – Untapped Award Winner 2025)
I guess sometimes sinning can be fun? This musical is about a boy from Peru preparing for his first communion, but his feelings for Jesus, um, go beyond the platonic, and his family are not pleased. The humour is bold, leaving the entire audience in stitches, as we’re told an oddly relatable coming out story through a show that emits a faint essence of ‘The Book of Mormon’ but with a heightened emphasis on queerness and crudeness. ‘Jeezus!’ features musical numbers spanning different genres, reveling in the Latin flair provided by Sergio Antonio Maggiolo and Guido Garcia, who really know how to keep the crowd entertained with their highly energetic performances. So, God strike me down, but I loved this!
Underbelly Cowgate, until 24 Aug.
