COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
Three dance shows

Three dance shows at the Edinburgh Festival 2025…
Mary, Queen Of Scots | Festival Theatre | 15-17 Aug (pictured)
I think I have tipped some shows with dance in them elsewhere in the thematically based Three To See picks, but why not have a section that’s devoted entirely to dance? Heading to the Edinburgh International Festival first for a history based dance show (which means it’s ticking so much box for me) from Scottish Ballet, whose retelling of Mary’s story sees “renaissance meet punk”, which is cool. Voyeur/Samba And Love | Assembly @ Dance Base | until 24 Aug
So many great shows at Dance Base this year, I really wish I could mention all of them, so make sure that you check the other shows they have on this Fringe. But I felt very drawn to this double bill from Brazilian choreographer Lili de Grammont, featuring two pieces that explore vulnerability, control, tenderness and tension. Sole To Soul | theSpace @ Niddry Street | until 19 Aug
I’m always on the lookout for things that feel a bit different to me and this one certainly stood out because it blends elements of traditional Chinese opera with the “expressive symbolism of modern dance”. Thematically it explores the dilemmas of contemporary life and the cultural transition of Chinese women from tradition to modernity. Find the edfringe listing here.
