A man breathes down a microphone and swills water around a bucket. Somewhere else, a breath of wind cuts the air and it starts to bucket with rain. ‘Exit’ turns the metaphors ‘hail shower’ and ‘thunder clap’ into reality; a single hand clapping is enough to create the impression of a threatening clap of thunder. A clear homage to Sartre’s ‘No Exit’ – but with the notable difference that Hell is music and not other people – the play’s protagonist, with the aid of two black-clad musicians, masterfully sound-scapes his own inferno. Although watching three people clicking their fingers to mimic horses trotting quickly tires, it shows that beauty and music can be created from the simplest things.
