Dear Billy (National Theatre Of Scotland)

Practically everyone in Scotland has a personal connection with the country’s most famous comedian Billy Connolly. It’s this relationship that Gary McNair explores in Dear Billy. He canvases opinions on Billy from punters all over the country, and their comments, stories and mythologising form this heartwarming, celebratory performance. The show isn’t so much about Connolly’s routines as the humour of the Scottish people who have told McNair their funny, touching or embarrassing moments with the Big Yin. McNair is a skilful performer and he effortlessly brings all these people to life through their anecdotes. Simon Liddell and Jill O’Sullivan provide excellent musical accompaniment. The show sets out to put a smile on its audience’s faces and succeeds triumphantly.
