The Emu War: A New Musical (Pearl Whirl Productions)

As the audience got to their feet, I knew I had seen one of the greatest battles…in the form of a musical. Based on a true story, the show highlights what transpired in 1932 when Emus ‘threatened to take over’ Australia. There’s comedy galore through jokes, stage direction or even simply the performances of the cast who embody their uniquely brilliant characters. Even despite the bizarre storyline there are still compassionate, moving messages throughout the show thanks to Lotte Pearl’s delightful, well crafted script. Musical numbers, composed by Toby Little, are stunning, with impressive harmonies, and in addition to the excellent choreography and direction there is a great sense of buffoonery throughout. The Emu War certainly won’t be forgotten, especially while this show is being performed.

Pleasance Courtyard, until 25 Aug.
