Famously, ‘Waiting for Godot’ was described as a play in which nothing happens, twice. In ‘Paper Swans’, a classically formed piece of absurdist theatre which owes something to Beckett, ‘nothing’ happens half a dozen times – on the surface at least. But there’s intense interaction between the two highly stylised characters, one apparently rational the other seemingly not, and our understanding constantly moves forwards as the play explores the contrasting ways they, and we, find meaning in our existence. Each character, the rational more than the spiritual, struggles with understanding the other’s perspective but an acceptance is ultimately found. Balletic, intelligent, elusive and sometimes funny, with fine supporting music, this is great theatre for those who love the art form.
