Amateur dramatics at its best, ‘Trouble In The Tolbooth’ is a ridiculous comedy about Jamie and Thomas, two prisoners in a tolbooth jail in 1790s Scotland. In his attempts to break free, Thomas accidentally tunnels into a neighbouring cell inhabited by two female inmates who take a shine to him, and so chaos ensues… All the actors give excellent performances and have the audience laughing from the start of the show, while Saughtonhall Drama Group create a sense of community; watching the play, seated at tables alongside members of that community, with tea and biscuits served in the interval, made for a very cosy time. And that is why, for me, ‘Trouble In The Tolbooth’ embodied what am dram is really about, making it a valuable experience.
