Very Still And Hard To See (Belt Productions)
By Michael Black | Published on Thursday 29 August 2013
Being honest, I’m pretty unfamiliar with horror theatre, possibly because the genre is more common in the film domain. This show made me think of Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of ‘The Shining’, though admittedly only because both feature a hotel where weird things happen. In the play, the hotel’s architect makes a deal with the devil; if he moves the building so it can be infiltrated by Japanese spirits, she will grant him his innermost wish. Scenes of the guests having weird, eerie experiences follow, the Japanese spirits watching over the action only occasionally proving frightening. The plot fails to be gripping and the American accents are not wholly convincing. Belt Productions are clearly talented and skilled performers but this production would benefit from a lot more work.
Greenside, until 24 Aug (not 18), 4.05pm.
