The Three Little Pigs (National Arts Festival/Rob van Vuuren/Pink Couch/Assembly)

By | Published on Sunday 25 August 2013

This Orwellian tale of murder, lies and police brutality is unlike any fairytale you’ve seen before, although the skeleton of the story is essentially the same. Tension you could cut with a kitchen knife, audible gasps and twistedly gruesome deaths are overlaid with laugh out loud moments, grim comedy that only serves to make the dark background all the more disturbing. Captivatingly simple, each actor brings life to a variety of animal roles with a stunning level of commitment to the character and impressive physicality. The use of sound created in the darkness at the back of the stage means that the reality of the scene is never broken, trapping the audience within the action. I defy you to watch this show and not leave with the grunts of “Little Pig” haunting your dreams.

Assembly George Square, until 26 Aug, 5.45pm
