Ten Out of Ten (TOOT)

By | Published on Monday 12 August 2013

Name tags are given out on entry, and we are sat on evenly spaced seats around the room. There is a blackboard on the wall, and murmurs of audience participation. Dread begins to sink in but, as the cast coast around us playing retro synthesisers with beamingly optimistic smiles, we are put at ease. The play looks at how children have objective measures of success Рexams, grades, swimming certificates Рbut in adulthood, all this is lost. The show revives the simplicity of childhood through incessantly positive feedback to the audience’s simple tasks, with occasional dalliances in surrealist whimsy and dreamlike musical interludes. The process makes you smile from start to finish and, worryingly, does make your life seem better.

Assembly Hall, until 26 Aug (not 19), 4.00pm.
