76 Million People And Me (Irresponsible Decorators Theatre Company / Free Festival)

By | Published on Tuesday 20 August 2013

Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and Chairman Mao are all in a boat going to Hell. No, it’s not the start of a bad joke, but the plot of ‘76 Million People And Me’. Actually, maybe it is the start of a bad joke, since the play turned out to be one long one. It also has about as much coherence as Hitler’s crazed bunker rants in ‘Downfall’. In its more serious moments, the show makes some almost valid points about man’s inhumanity to man, but you will probably still be wincing too much after seeing ‘Chairman Mao’ tape his eyes up in order to look Chinese to notice. Lurching from one half-baked historical musing to another, this play is sadly as lifeless as its deceased rulers.

Laughing Horse @ The Free Sisters, until 15 Aug, 5.00pm.
