Tony Jameson – Football Manager Ruined My Life (Tony Jameson / The Stand Comedy Club)
By Andrew Pollard | Published on Friday 9 August 2013
This review comes with a cautionary note: it’s assumed anyone who watches this show is well versed in the language of football. Since the clue’s in the title, criticising it on the basis of its niche reference material would be like describing Nandos as awful because you don’t like chicken. So, on that proviso, I can assure you that this is clever, confident, grass-roots comedy at its finest. Charismatic, and with intuitive timing, Jameson gives us a brief insight into his life and to what extent Football Manager is responsible for messing it up. This is fluid storytelling which conjures huge laughs for those who get the references, and even those who don’t. Unapologetically nerdy and amusingly sad, Jameson’s scored with this one.
The Stand Comedy Club III & IV, 25 Aug (not 12), 2.20pm.
