Toby Explains The Universe (Toby Muresianu / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Joe Abel | Published on Tuesday 13 August 2013
Toby Muresianu’s set takes a while to warm up – his observations on the cultural differences between Americans and “The British” are good-natured if not exactly scathing. But after the first 20 minutes, he’s operating above the mode of “What Is The Deal With X?” comedians. A conscientious, thought-provoking renaissance-dude, whose rhythmic set-ups and pay-offs, repetitive rise and fall delivery, mimics his peer-group in style not content. After the crafted, contained set-ups and reveals are dispensed with, he seems to be enjoying himself more. His more developed and substantial jokes, on the grandiose titular ambition, are smuggled in between wry commentaries on the mundane. His affable personality and unassuming, grounded manner carry the show, devoid of the egotism frequently co-morbid with comic ability.
The Dram House Upstairs, until 25 Aug (not 5, 6, 20), 3.00pm.
