Planet Of The Japes (Christopher Hammond / Free Festival)
By Elizabeth Jewell | Published on Friday 16 August 2013
Christopher Hammond and David Rees-Jones have teamed up to showcase their comedy for the very first time at the Edinburgh Fringe. The two performers have distinctly different styles, each employing varying quantities of silliness and observational humour. Unfortunately, the gloriously punny title of the show is probably the funniest joke in it; there were many awkward moments, the venue was hushed, and the general air of the show was distinctly amateur. The comedians were affable, and I really wanted to like it, but “points for effort” is the most flattering thing to be said. Ultimately, competing with the slicker, more professional comics this year, ‘Planet of the Japes’ does not compare favourably, and is far from memorable.
