Mike Newall – Six Weddings (Mike Newall / Fluid Thinking)

By | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013

Mike Newall has generally well-crafted jokes, great call-backs and a wonderfully dry delivery. Occasionally, however, he can seem almost apologetic about his material, which becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy, as such delivery can cause jokes not to land right. Whilst all the material is good, the overall structure of the routine is a bit weak. As Newall acknowledges, the set isn’t about weddings that much, and without a strong framework and consistent signposting it can be difficult to see where he’s going with material. That said, his delight in the mundane is infectious as he enthusiastically explains his sock laundry system and why he loves supermarkets. The material is very funny and, I think, with a bit more structure this would make a great show.

Just The Tonic at The Tron, until 25 Aug, 6.20pm.
