Rumplestiltskin (The WC’s)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013
The script for this youth theatre production of ‘Rumplestiltskin’ is surprisingly good; it’s full of peppy songs, sharp wordplay and plenty of silliness. The young cast give it their best shot, but only the eponymous anti-hero, Rumplestiltskin, really has a chance to shine. The rest of the parts are just a little rushed, never giving them time to develop or for their jokes to shine. The staging is also a little awkward – too often we have too many people on the tiny stage – and the clever bits, such as the tower door, get lost in the muddle. Despite being likeable and entertaining, this show needs more time to breathe and less frantic, scene swapping action.
Sweet Grassmarket, until 23 Aug, 1.00pm.
