Wonderland (Edinburgh International Festival / Vanishing Point)

By | Published on Saturday 1 September 2012

This dark and dreary rabbit hole is far from what Lewis Carroll’s Alice experienced. Wonderland depicts the allure of pornography, particularly the Internet’s role in it, in a detached and frighteningly clever way. Wonderland’s Alice runs away from home to partake in the violent pornography industry, shredding Carroll’s innocent Alice and replacing her with a modern day Sphinx. On stage were two two-way mirrored panels: a looking glass of sorts, meant to represent the media screens we are so adapted to. Through said looking glass we saw silent domestic scenes of Alice’s home and parents, primarily focusing on her father’s keen interest in a similar extreme pornography that Alice had run away to. With clever theatrical tricks and impeccable acting, this play surely delivers a disturbing truth; however, it does so at the expense of a cohesive storyline.
