We Are Not Here (Babygang)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

If you can imagine the Three Stooges performing ‘Waiting for Godot’ in the janitor’s cupboard of an Italian mental institution, this might be the show for you. Dancing back and forth across the line between genius and absolute drivel, this is a confrontational and complex performance, mixing Beckett and Brecht with schizophrenic slapstick and startling imagery; some beautiful, some profoundly unsettling. It’s the performers who make it, launching themselves wholeheartedly into every absurd argument, every childish game and every act of sudden violence. Their total investment demands the audience’s full attention, making the show riveting despite the difficult nature of the work. For many, this will be unwatchable, for others it will be a powerful and indelible existentialist dream.

Summerhall, 11-16 Aug, 5.15pm.
