US Beef (Missing String Theatre Company)

By | Published on Saturday 11 August 2012

Unlike Meatbox, the company employing protagonist Buck Matthews as a door to door steak salesman, ‘US Beef’ fails to deliver anything meaty to chew on. At times it feels as though the sincerity with which the cast perform overshadows the darkly comic slant to the narrative, as is certainly the case with the final number, inviting the audience to quit being a dreamer and join the corporate world. Every member of the cast appears on-stage tucking into a greasy burger at one moment or another, effectively (if literally) demonstrating the fact that fast food culture is invading every corner of the universe. The live country/rock backing is certainly catchy, but the show needs more time before it reaches well done.

Pleasance Dome, 4-27 Aug (not 15), 12.20pm.
