The Spirit Of Frances Wright (Love Is An Action Verb) (Perihelion Theater Company And Productions, North Carolina)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

Frances Wright was a woman ahead of her time, a passionate reformer and advocate of equality in 19thCentury America. More a prose reading than a play, this show charts her extraordinary life and utopian dreams. Karyn Traut’s script is rich with details and sharpened by ironic observations, while actress Dylan Guy is jovial and charismatic, determined to connect with the audience despite performing script in hand. However, the production does little to make her easier to watch, with staging limited to some shuffling steps and a few lacklustre lighting cues. Though this kind of performance will always struggle to find an audience, those with an interest in Wright or Civil Rights will find this a sensitive, informative portrayal.

Sweet Grassmarket, 3-27 Aug (not 18, 25), 1.10pm.
