The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time (Big Spirit Theatre)

Mark Haddon’s bestselling novel follows autistic schoolboy Christopher, whose investigation into a canine murder reveals his own family’s dark secrets. This boldly physical interpretation surrounds the central character with a chorus of bustling, babbling bodies, creating simple and satisfying stage pictures that neatly convey the troubled boy’s isolation. The effect is heightened by the decision to have Christopher played by two actors. Josh Sharp, flinching, stuttering and painfully shy is contrasted with Brendan Luca’s forthright narration as the boy’s inner voice. Even if some of the cast aren’t quite such skilled actors as the leads, the ensemble as a whole is tight and dynamic. Energetic and engaging, they succeed in drawing a clear, compelling story out of the choreographed confusion.
