Bye Bye World (Gehring & Ketelaars / Frijling)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

This is how two person plays should be done. Compelling, tragic and very often funny, it’s the intertwined story of two very different women who decide to run away from their lives. Self realisation is a simple idea, possibly overused, but here, presented in a sharp, focused little play, it doesn’t matter. It’s told in short, semi-acted, semi-narrated monologues made cohesive by sharing their themes. Both actresses take on every aspect of their character – from the angst to the denial, to the brief hilarious moments – and combine them to make real people. That’s not easy when the form and direction of a play is as stylised as it is here. Part storytelling, part pantomime, part impressionism; it really is beautiful.

Underbelly Cowgate, 15-26 Aug, 11.35am.
