The Makropulos Case (Edinburgh International Festival / Opera North)

Edge-of-your-seat mystery, an unsolved case, and a 300-year-old-woman all conspire to make ‘The Makropulos Case’ a new, well-made modern English translation of an opera that will remain in your mind long after you leave the theatre. With colour co-ordinated set design and costumes that reflect the Roaring 20s, the show also features a stellar voice ensemble combining humour with drama to great effect. Add in the lavish orchestra conducted by Richard Farnes, and it becomes nearly impossible to tear your eyes and ears away from this spectacle unfolding on-stage. At times you become so engrossed in the story, you even forget you are in a theatre. The only downside is the limited number of performances – this is a show not to be missed!
