The Boy Friend (The St Marylebone CE School Nomadic Theatre Company)
By Rebecca Low | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Sandy Wilson’s twee musical Charlestons its way into life thanks to the vim and vigour of the pupils from St Marylebone CE School. The bright young cast takes us to the French Riviera of the 1920s, where the students of the Villa Caprice are all in search of ”that certain thing called the Boy Friend”. The quartet of giggly girls are silly and spot-on as Madame Dubonnet’s ”Perfect Young Ladies”, with those portraying Maisie and Polly Browne in particular offering stand-out performances. Although the choreography isn’t the slickest and the staging perhaps a little too simple, the strong singing talent and the confidence of the cast ensure that this isn’t just another school show. Rather!
