Assassins (Princeton University Players)

Darkly comic and dazzlingly performed, this musical narration of various Presidential assassinations (successful or otherwise) intertwines the lives of a series of “mad men”, outlining their twisted dreams and dangerous ambitions. Setting the scene at an all-American “Hit the ‘Prez’ and win a prize” fairground stall, the show begins by focusing on John Wilkes Booth, assassin of President Lincoln. Even after being shot, Booth continues to persuade each murderer that their crimes were mere dreams of American freedom and should be rewarded. With appearances from Leon Czolgosz, ‘Squeaky’ Fromme, and other infamous names, the non-chronological plot leads to the appearance of Lee Harvey Oswald, assassin of JFK. Extraordinarily clever, this Sondheim masterpiece offers an extremely shrewd lesson in morality, and this is a good production of it.
