Palmstar Poppy – Songs In Search Of Lost Love At Sea (David Paul Jones)

By | Published on Sunday 12 August 2012

In strolls a kind-looking man, reminding me of Downton Abbey’s Mr Bates; winning my trust by virtue of this resemblance alone. I’m intrigued as he passionately narrates the tale of a lovesick sailor. However, for the next hour I’m trapped in a hell of impossibly long, middle-of-the-road ballads, the lyrics of which may be in Swedish (who knows?), with melodies repetitive and mundane. Bates has a charming voice, and is a piano proficient, but sorely abuses his talents. His intense performance-style has me suppressing giggles for two-thirds of the show. For the remainder, I seek escape in sleep, and I’m almost successful, but then Bates belts out another indecipherable love-cry. I’m abruptly tossed back into the spectator’s prison for another twenty-five painful minutes.
