Austen George

By | Published on Monday 20 August 2012

This man was born to sing. A melodic hybrid of Rufus Wainwright, Ryan Adams, Turin Brakes, Van Morrison and even a little REM, it’s immediately obvious that Austen George is most at home when singing. Even the mumbled dialogue between tracks cannot lessen this exceptional talent; the songs are beautifully crafted, and George’s voice is heartbreakingly good. The slapdash arrangement, complete with ”what song’s next?” and ”what key?”, just adds to the sense that this is how live music is supposed to be – spontaneous, emotive, and without pretension. The performance really showcases the musical abilities of George and his band; they instinctively adapt, and never put a foot wrong. These are songs that will stand the test of time.

Acoustic Music Centre @ St Bride’s, 6-7 Aug, 7.30pm.
