Nina Conti – Dolly Mixtures (Mick Perrin For Just For Laughs Live)

By | Published on Friday 24 August 2012

Nina Conti is the daughter of actor Tom Conti but, as far as I’m concerned, this ventriloquist puppeteer could be the daughter of Jim Henson. Unlike Elmo, however, these puppets have a dark side, insulting the audience and inciting hysteria whilst Nina looks embarrassed. Arguably, the best character is ‘Killer’ the ironic pitbull who raided Claire’s Accessories in the London riots for pink bows and tutus, while the audience favoured familiar characters ‘Monkey’ and home crowd pleaser ‘Granny’ from Edinburgh. The pièce de résistance was created by Conti attaching mouthpieces to two strangers from the audience, enabling her to create a passionate love story between them. When Granny says “Happy Days!” – I’m inclined to agree.

Pleasance Dome, 1-27 Aug (not 13, 20), 8.30pm.
