Convicted (Pinder, Wight, Choyce and Davies / PBH’s Free Fringe)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

The boisterous ‘Convicted’ MC interacts with his audience well, while skilfully introducing this showcase of mainly Australian talent to the Fringe. Unfortunately his line-up is a mixed bag. Likeable but nervy, Sian Choyce offered a slightly shaky observational set that lurched a little too awkwardly from topic to topic, though there were kernels of great promise when she got it right. Guest act, Danish bagpiper Claus Reiss, filled the stage with a calm, wry wit and genuine musical talent. But none of this could save a show that concluded with Nellie Wight’s crude, sexually graphic jokes. Her ten minutes were unconvincing, and made it hard to be impressed by ‘Convicted’ overall. Though, to be fair, perhaps the time slot was wrong, Wight’s act might just work in a late night slot with a more appropriate heading; I’d suggest ‘An Introduction To Pornography’.

Cabaret Voltaire, 4-24 Aug (not 15, 22), 2.35pm.
