The Jabberwocky (Pop-Up Productions)

By | Published on Tuesday 21 August 2012

A brillig, whimsical production, ‘The Jabberwocky’ follows young Jack through his poetical dreams: meeting slithy toves, outsmarting jubjub birds and learning the joys of language. Taking its cue from the nonsensical words of the original poem, The Jabberwocky is full of dreamlike imagery – the twisting trees and the Jabberwocky being particularly memorable – underscored by a haunting soundtrack. However, and maybe it’s due to the lack of children in the audience, some characters are a little too mimsy, and the bandersnatch is less frumious than one might have hoped. The cast do their best though, getting us gyring and gimbling despite the low turnout. This is a pleasing little play, but it doesn’t have quite enough oomph to make us shout “Callooh! Callay!”
