Pandora’s Box – Free (Joanne Jollie, Class Stage Productions, Free Festival)
By Lia Sanders | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Dressed in a basque, patriotic knickers and a superwoman cape, Joanne Jollie’s alter ego XXL stripper Pandora gives us her life story, interspersed with appropriate, crowd-stirring, stonking songs. Her singing is very impressive, and she covers a wide range of adaptations of popular songs belted out to the recorded music; we have her take on such reworked classics as ‘Simply The Chest’ and ‘I Don’t Want To Make Love To You’. Although she’s rather a stock working-class character and Pandora’s story isn’t really funny, the quick turn-over of songs and stand-up keeps our attention. There’s some utterly humiliating but nonetheless good-natured audience participation as she gets people up to act as backing dancers, a doctor, her ex-partner. Overall: very enjoyable.
