Tales From The Vienna Woods (12)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

This piece combines a strong artistic aesthetic and successful acting to produce something that is both innovative and enchanting. Characters concern themselves with their own parochial troubles as their lives gradually fall to pieces to the tune of different Strauss waltzes. The sound of the accordion and the chorus of harmonising voices are at once haunting and beautiful. Black sunglasses, worn at times during the production, lie in sharp juxtaposition with the romantic 1930’s attire, and hints at something much darker that lurks behind the nostalgic milieu of the Vienna Woods – the rise of Fascism. This is a well-constructed production that demonstrates the young company’s energy and dedication. There’s room for them to grow, but this piece certainly deserves attention.
