Rumors (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Zulekha Grace | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
A hundred ping-pong balls in a dryer wouldn’t provide as much chaos as does this performance by American High School Theatre Festival. The company’s idea of humour seemed to involve making as many unrelated things as possible happen simultaneously, and their idea of acting appeared to be bellowing progressively louder as the show wore on. With, at times, eight people shouting at once, the play was confusing and exhausting. Furthermore, although it centred on an unsolved mystery, no resolution was offered at the end of the play. Despite these negatives, some of the acting was vivacious and fluid, and the frenzied humour did provoke multiple rounds of laughter from the audience. A decent attempt, but I wouldn’t suggest watching it.
