Now Is The Winter (Alarum Theatre)

This is well-performed and well-produced, but it is the choice of play that brings this show to its knees. A full cast performance of ‘Richard III’ is difficult to follow – Al Pacino made an entire film to explain it – so a solo show is ambitious. When the programme contains a synopsis of the play, that’s a hint. Lost in pronouns, titles and names, within minutes it was hard to remain engaged. Unfortunate, considering the quality of this production: rich smells of cooking come from a set full of veg and pottery; recorded sound sets the scene very well; and lighting is used to great effect. I found myself wishing for the same performer in a different play. A real missed opportunity.

Assembly Hall, 4 – 28 Aug, 12.30pm (1.30pm), £7.00 – £10.00, 284fpp.
