My Best Friend Drowned In A Swimming Pool (Sunday’s Child)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Putting a great deal of effort into feigning indifference, Sunday’s Child are a young company taking on a heavy subject: the repercussions of a premature death. Walking the line between morbidity and insensitivity, writer Eva O’Connor offers five distinct characters and very little commentary, fleshing out her story through extended monologues and brief ensemble scenes charting a group of teenagers’ visceral responses to bereavement. While there are strong performances amongst the uneven cast, the production feels unfocussed and inconsistent; the script’s ironic detachment and nihilistic outlook sit uncomfortably beside earnest discussions of grief, while flashes of dance, pounding music and drug use appear arbitrarily, leaving you with the impression that this is a production trying too hard to be cool.
