Man To Man (Leith On The Fringe)

A woman takes her dead husband’s clothes, becomes him, and lives as though she were he, working as a crane-operator during the gathering ascendancy of Nazism. That is the premise of this strikingly visual but inconsistent piece of theatre. The overall scope of the piece is too broad and never manages to engage the audience for longer than the length of the individual scenes, and the inconsistent sometimes-Scottish, sometimes-German accent of actress Samantha Seaugh only added to the slight sense of confusion that this play produced. Though the conceit is interesting, it is jaggedly developed; revealed in brief extracts of Ella Gericke’s life, they are at times mesmerising but fail to build into an absorbing overall narrative.
