Black Shorts – Free (Mary’s Sofa)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Pleasingly dark and bitter, ‘Black Shorts’ is a series of longer than average sketches impressively performed in the tiny back room of Finnegan’s Wake. Subtly funny with a distinctly warped world view, ‘Black Shorts’ is not your run of the mill Fringe sketch show; instead it gives us time to meet, understand and appreciate its varied cast of twisted characters. Whilst the straight comic sketches are only quite good, the show really shines when we reach the darker character pieces, with the “End Of The Season” monologue especially, being worthy of Alan Bennett in its slow, brutal deconstruction of life and love. A daring and different show that deserves a bigger venue and a longer run next year.

Laughing Horse at Finnegan’s Wake, 4 – 12 Aug (not 7), 4.45pm (5.45pm), free, fpp244.
